I stay idly in my boat on the pond.
I'm loath to show my old body
Behind closed doors.
Guests are few.
With the late night rain
My melancholy lingers;
Here is its home.
A remaining nightingale
Summons the spring
To return to its source.
Secretly I take up the wine-jug
With its newly brewed wine,
Open the clothes-chest
Intending to wear
Old hemp garments.
Life is merely a succession
Of winter furs and summer linens.
On the verge of old age
How swiftly fly past
Time's glow and shadow!
